Good Morning Bighorns Families,

Tonight marks our final session of the summer skills program, and I just want to say how proud I am of this group. I hope every player learned at least a couple new things, gained some confidence, and had a whole lot of fun. That’s the goal, build a foundation and get them warmed up for the season ahead.

For those returning for Session 2, the structure will look very similar to the progression we’ve started, just with some fresh drills and games mixed in. There will be an element of building where we left off while still introducing skills to those skaters joining us for the first time.

And as always, if you have any questions about your player’s development or anything else related to hockey, feel free to grab me at the rink or shoot me an email any time. I’m always happy to help however I can.

Also, HAYHA will be sending out a quick survey after this final skate. The sooner I get your feedback, the better I can respond and improve for the next session, which starts in just a week and a half. Anything you liked, didn’t like, or suggestions you want to pass along are all greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to a great final skate tonight!

Good Morning Bighorns Families,

We’ve officially made it to the final week of summer skills Session 1! It’s been awesome watching this group grow each session, and I appreciate all the energy and effort from the players and families throughout.

Tonight is our last full day of structured skill work. We’ll be getting after it with a strong mix of skating, shooting, puck control, and passing. Wednesday will still include some hockey development, but we’ll dial up the fun a bit more to finish the program off on a high note.

Here’s what we’ve got planned:

Power Skating (5:30 – 5:53 PM): Group format, focused on edge control and transitions

Modified Glide Turn and Shooting Drill: Movement, control, and shooting on the move

Red Line Passing & Backward Skate Return: Communication, passing, and backward puck control

Coach Says + Stickhandling Shapes: Fun reaction games and stationary handling patterns to wrap it up

Let’s finish strong tonight and get ready to celebrate the kids on Wednesday.

Good Morning Bighorns Families,

Tonight’s Skate 8 closes out the week with a great mix of skating, skill work, and fun. We’ve shortened the power skating block slightly to make room for a full round of stations and a game to finish strong.

Here’s what we’ve got lined up:

Tag-Out (Coyote vs Roadrunner) in the neutral zone to work on awareness and quick feet

Puck Protection with Ringettes, teaching body positioning and control without the stick

Slalom Relay Shot Race, combining edge work, puck pickup, and shooting

And we’ll end with a full-ice game of Sharks and Minnows to send them off with smiles

Looking forward to a great night on the ice, let’s finish the week with a strong performance!

Good Morning Bighorns families,

We’re kicking off Week 4 of our summer skills camp tonight, and I’ve got to say it’s been a blast watching the development happening out there. The energy has been great, and the kids are picking up more each week.

Tonight, we’ll start with full-ice power skating, then move into a set of stations that continue our progression in skating and passing fundamentals. We’ll work through:

Iron Cross Passing, which builds timing and awareness on the move

Gates of Buffalo, a fun small-area passing game that forces heads-up play

Backwards Give and Go, introducing basic backward skating with puck support

We’re looking forward to a strong final two weeks of training, ending with some fun and skill reinforcement. Thanks again for being part of it all, and we’ll see you at the rink tonight.

Welcome to Week 3 of HAYHA Summer Skills – 6U, 8U Group

Tonight is Wednesday, which means we’ll end the session with something fun. This week, it’s another relay race, similar to last week’s but a little shorter. These game-based finishes are a great way to reinforce effort, movement, and competition while keeping things enjoyable for the players.

Lately, the group sizes have been small, whether due to weather or other summer activities. Families do not need to notify me in advance. We will always make the most of the players we have on the ice and give them the attention and reps they need.

See you at the rink.

Welcome to Week 3 – HAYHA Summer Skills (6U/8U)

Last Wednesday’s skating review was a huge success, and it was great to see noticeable improvement from so many players right away. We won’t return to formal review until Week 5, but I’m looking forward to seeing the same kind of progress as we move forward.

Tonight’s focus shifts back to puck movement, passing, and timing. We’ll be skating through a full progression that includes passing while moving, give-and-go awareness, and finishing with controlled shooting. As always, our goal is confidence and repetition.

See you at the rink,

Welcome to Week 2, Skate 4 – 6U & 8U Families

Tonight we build on last week’s progress with some review in skating.

Power-skating review, 18 minutes – refreshing balance, edge control, quick strides.

Three fast skill stations, 9 minutes each – wide-lane speed carry, puck-handling agility, circle stick-handling.

Relay finale, 15 minutes – our “Net Push Gauntlet” will have every skater racing, sliding under pads, and working together for a team win.

The players have been attentive and respectful; please remind them to take a knee instead of sitting so we keep lines moving and ice clear. Thanks for your support and for getting skates sharpened and helmets labeled. See you at the rink.

Welcome to Week 2 HAYHA Summer Skills (6U/8U Group)

We’re off and running! Week 1 was a great start, we laid the groundwork with some focused skating, stationary puck control, and simple passing drills. The kids were locked in and smiling, and that’s exactly the energy we’re bringing again this week.

On Monday, we’ll jump into Week 2 with another round of power skating, continuing balance and edge control into turning and pivoting. From there, we’ll start introducing more movement and decision-making with fun, game-like drills like 3v1 Keep Away, Tire Stickhandling with a Shot, and Chase the Rabbit. Each activity is designed to push players just a little further while keeping things fast, focused, and fun.

See you at the rink!

U6/U8 – Wednesday Night Message

Good evening, Bighorns,

I just wanted to say how impressed I was with the focus and effort from the U6 and U8 crew on Wednesday night. For a lot of these skaters, it was their first time back on the ice this summer, but they jumped right in and stayed engaged the entire session.

Honestly, I’ve had a harder time wrangling lieutenants in the Army than I did this group. They were awesome to work with.

Thank you for all of the parents that reached out. If I haven't responded I will very soon.

HAYHA sent out a 25–26 season survey to gather input from families on programming and scheduling. Please take a moment to complete it if you haven't already:

Welcome to Week 1 of HAYHA Summer Skills – 6U/8U Group

We’re excited to hit the ice for our first skills session! Tonight’s focus will be on fundamentals: stationary puck handling, partner stickhandling warm-ups, and some simple passing drills that reinforce control and awareness. We’ll wrap with fun games designed to build confidence and comfort with the puck. This is a great starting point for all skaters, and we’ll build from here each week. The link above is a breakdown of our Day 1 intent. Wish us luck!!
