Good Morning Bighorns Families,

Tonight wraps up Session 1 for our 10U/12U group, and I just want to say thank you for a great few weeks. It’s been awesome to see the effort, energy, and growth from this crew each night. I hope everyone learned a few new things, made some progress, and had fun in the process.

Tonight’s skate is designed to celebrate that with a mix of games, competition, and our full-ice 5v5 scrimmage to close it out. We’ll run our NHL vs AHL Relay, have some edgework-based challenges (and maybe a quick game of tic-tac-toe relay if time allows), and end with a full-ice game to let them play freely and apply what they’ve learned.

As for Session 2, we’ll be starting fresh again with new players in the mix, so the structure and skill progression will remain the same, but we’ll rotate in new drills to keep it engaging. It’ll still be familiar for those returning, just a new round of challenges.

HAYHA will be sending out a brief parent survey after this week’s final skate. Quick responses really help me adjust and improve the next session. If there’s anything you particularly liked or didn’t like, or if you have suggestions, it’s all welcome and appreciated.

As always, feel free to reach out at the rink or by email with any questions about your player’s development or anything else I can support.

Looking forward to a great finish tonight!

Good Morning Bighorns Families,

It’s our final week of summer skills, and tonight will be our last full day of structured skill development. Wednesday’s skate will shift toward a more fun, game-like format, so tonight’s the time to lock in, get moving, and push for a strong finish.

This group has come a long way, and we’re excited to finish on a high note. Tonight’s focus is puck possession and control while skating, with a good amount of 1v1 and game-relevant pressure built in.

Here’s what’s on the agenda:

Power Skating: Group format, pushing tempo and control through transitions

Finnish Skills Series: Tight movement, quick hands, and short-space puck handling

Finnish 5 Puck Progression: Stickhandling flow and control through layered obstacles

Chute Angling 1v1: Competitive reps with an emphasis on puck protection, angling, and battle

Let’s make it a good one.

Good Morning Bighorns Families,

Week 5 brings us into the heart of summer, and this group continues to bring awesome energy and focus each skate. It’s been a blast watching their progress build week to week.

Tonight’s session is all about fun and competition. After a full-ice power skating block to get us moving, we’ll hit two quick stations before wrapping with a full-ice 5v5 scrimmage to put everything into action.

Pass Through the Cones 2v2, a fast-paced game that rewards puck support and decision-making

Wall Retrievals, reinforcing how to recover pucks and make smart outlet plays under pressure

Then we finish with Five Alive, a full-ice game designed to bring out the compete level and give the players some freedom to play

Let’s keep it light, competitive, and fun as we hit the ice tonight.

Good Morning Bighorns Families,

Week 4 is here, and it’s been awesome to see the growth from this group. The kids continue to bring great energy and focus, and we’re seeing real progress across the board.

Tonight’s skate builds on our passing progression while starting to introduce early positional concepts—especially puck retrievals and breakout support. After our full-ice power skating, we’ll rotate through:

Iron Cross Passing, which sharpens awareness and timing under motion

Pass Through The Cones 2 v 2, a small-area game emphasizing puck movement and finding open space

Wall Retrievals, teaching our players how to support and move the puck off the boards with purpose

Appreciate the consistent effort from everyone. Let’s keep the momentum going heading into the final stretch.

Welcome to Week 3 of HAYHA Summer Skills – 10U, 12U Group

It’s Wednesday, which means we’ll close out tonight with games. This group will wrap the skate with a small-area 3-on-3 game after working through some puck handling and passing challenges designed to reinforce movement, transitions, and decision-making with the puck.

Group sizes have continued to be on the smaller side, whether due to weather or other summer activities. No need to notify me in advance; we’ll make the most of whoever is on the ice and ensure they get full value from every session.

See you tonight.

Welcome to Week 3 – U10/U12 Group

It was great to see so much progress during last week’s skating review. The group as a whole has clearly been building on our early work, and that showed right away. We’ll push forward with new skill work tonight, including puck protection, lateral puck handling with movement, and an introduction to slapshot technique.

The focus and behavior on the ice has been excellent. Just a quick reminder to all skaters, if you’re not in the middle of a drill, stay locked in on what’s happening so you're ready to jump in. Avoid shooting pucks or freelancing between reps.

Looking forward to another productive session. See you on the ice.

Welcome to Week 2, Skate 4 – 10U & 12U Families

Tonight we sharpen what we learned Monday, then add new puck-protection and passing challenges.

Power-skating review, 18 minutes, full ice – stride balance, edge quickness, smooth stops.

Circle Race one-on-one battle, 9 minutes, near end – race for the puck, protect it, attack the net.

Criss-Cross drop-pass attack, 9 minutes, far end – timing and communication as Blue and Green pairs trade the puck and finish hard.

Six-cone skill series, 9 minutes, neutral zone – tight turns, shuffles and quick releases.

Relay race finale, 15 minutes, full ice – speed, edges and team energy to close the night.

Thanks for having skaters ready and on time; your support keeps sessions running smoothly. See you at the rink.

Welcome to Week 2 HAYHA Summer Skills (10U/12U Group)

Great to be back for another week of training! Last Monday, we got off to a strong start with foundational skating work and puck control under pressure. Tonight, we’re building on that by introducing power turns, quick transitions, and puck possession-focused drills that will challenge players to think fast and move with purpose.

We’ll also be adding some backhand shooting work—an often overlooked skill that makes a huge difference in scoring and tight-area play. Players will rotate through a blend of small-area games, shooting drills, and 1v1 battles that reinforce quick decisions, body positioning, and stick control.

Looking forward to seeing everyone out on the ice and keeping the momentum going.

U10/U12 – Wednesday Night Message

Good evening Bighorns,

Really solid effort from the U10 and U12 group Wednesday night. The kids came out moving, focused well through the station work, and showed a lot of energy. It was a great way to kick off the summer.

Thank you for all of the parents that reached out. If I haven't responded I will very soon.

HAYHA sent out a 25–26 season survey to gather input from families on programming and scheduling. Please take a moment to complete it if you haven't already:

Welcome to Week 1 of HAYHA Summer Skills – 10U/12U Group

Monday’s session will focus on skating form, edge control, and core puck control skills (practice plan link above). We’ll start with clean skating habits and work through station-based handling and passing drills designed to reestablish fundamentals. The goal is to build a strong technical base so players are prepared to take on more complex skills in the weeks ahead.
